What is a Noun Phrase?

A group of words that acts like a noun in a sentence is called noun phrase. It usually includes a noun and words that describe or modify it.

Examples of noun phrases:

  • the small boy
  • an old laptop
  • my favorite dish
  • those beautiful birds

Each of these noun phrases works in a sentence as one unit.

Structure of a Noun Phrase

The typical structure of a noun phrase is:

Determiner + Adjective + Noun + Modifier (it is optional)

Example:

  • The intelligent student of the class.
    • Determiner: The
    • Adjective: intelligent
    • Noun: student
    • Modifier: of the class

Note: It is not necessary that all noun phrases have adjectives or modifier, even a single noun can be a noun phrase.

Types of Noun Phrases

There are three main types:

  1. Simple Noun Phrase: It contains only a noun or a noun with a determiner.
    • Example: The cat
  2. Compound Noun Phrase: Which contains two or more nouns together.
    • Example: Father and mother
  3. Complex or Expanded Noun Phrase: It contains a noun plus adjectives, modifiers, or prepositional phrases.
    • Example: The tall tree in the green field

How to Identify a Noun Phrase in a Sentence

Here are a group of words that act together as a noun.

Example Sentence:
A cute girl with the red dress is dancing.

  • Noun Phrase: A cute girl with the yellow dress
  • A large garden grows behind the mountain. → Noun Phrase: A large garden
  • My favorite cup is in the kitchen. → Noun Phrase: My favorite cup
  • Those beautiful buildings are new. → Noun Phrase: Those beautiful buildings
